Why Learn Numbers First ? Numbers as prefixes and suffixes in Chinese
Numbers in Chinese play a very important role in word formation. Numbers are used as prefixes and suffixes to build other words. In fact, after learning how to count from 1 to 10 in Chinese, lots of other numbers follow easily. This means that you could easily start to go shopping, ask telephone numbers, talk about age and much more.. Everywhere we turn in life, we need numbers. In Chinese, numbers are much more than that. Let's take the months of the year which you can easily learn in one go after you learn to count from 1 to 12. In Mandarin, the months of the year are simply formed by combining a number to the word "month". That would mean for example that January, would be one (yi 1)+ month(yue 4) = Yiyue. The same logic applies for the other months. Listen to our podcast on numbers and get more tips on how numbers can help you expand your vocabulary.
